How it Works

For businesses with high energy demand, a battery the size of a single parking space is installed onsite. It stores off-peak energy so it can be used during high demand hours, reducing your energy bill and avoiding demand charges.

Unlock Grid Relief

By shifting the amount and timing of grid electricity use, batteries can generate multiple value streams, including reduced demand charges, which amount to 40% or more of business electricity bills in California.

  • The primary purpose of these installations is to reduce your facility’s electricity costs by lowering reliance on the utility grid during high-demand, high-price periods. Doing so also benefits your utility provider, which helps to underwrite the cost of the program — creating a win-win for both sides. In addition, the batteries qualify for federal tax incentives that further reduce project costs.

  • A wide variety of businesses served by utilities such as Pacific Gas & Electric, Southern California Edison or San Diego Gas & Electric with at least $10,000 in monthly electricity costs. Typical commercial and industrial customers that are a good fit from the program would include cold storage facilities, distribution warehouses, manufacturing plants, grocery chains, large retailers, large wineries and car dealerships.

  • Entities not served by an investor-owned utility are generally ineligible to participate. This includes customers of municipal utilities, electric cooperatives, or publicly owned power agencies, as well as facilities not connected to the distribution grid. Sites operating entirely off-grid or without a utility meter cannot participate, since program eligibility depends on drawing power from and exporting to the utility system. Additionally, projects with minimal grid consumption or flat-rate tariffs (lacking time-of-use pricing) are typically not viable under the program’s structure.

  • The batteries that would be deployed at your business would be lithium-ion batteries, the same battery chemistry used in your mobile phones, laptops, electric vehicles and many other devices in your home. They would just be much larger in size. They store electricity from the grid, solar panels or other electricity generation technologies for use later, when needed. They typically can maintain power services for two to four hours, depending upon the size, manufacturer and configuration.

  • Our battery systems use advanced lithium-ion technology supplied by top-tier manufacturers that meet the highest international safety standards. Each system includes a smart battery-management platform that continuously monitors temperature, voltage, and performance to prevent thermal runaway and ensure safe operation. The units are enclosed in weather-proof cabinets and installed outdoors to maintain a safe distance from buildings. Unlike diesel or gas generators, battery systems contain no flammable fuels and produce no on-site emissions.

  • Renewable America handles the entire process from start to finish — including the initial site assessment, engineering, construction, ongoing maintenance, and any future equipment upgrades. Participating companies don’t need to manage insurance, permits, or utility agreements; the complete package is managed and executed by Renewable America. In many cases, projects can be completed and operational in as little as 3–6 months, depending on site conditions and utility coordination.

  • The system is compact and modular, typically occupying the footprint of one to two standard parking spaces, depending on the capacity and configuration required for your site.

  • The program is available to qualifying businesses throughout California. To get started, simply complete the online intake form at www.renewableamerica.com/ingest-form or reach out directly by email at info@renewam.com or by phone at (408) 663-6647. A Renewable America representative will review your information and follow up to discuss eligibility and next steps.
